Kwesi Mitchell, a new resident of The Standard Apartments and a friend of Robert Herrera, Founder of The Mill, brings fresh energy and perspective to Downtown Wilmington’s vibrant scene.
He recently shared his story with The Mill team, reflecting on reconnecting with an old college friend and his excitement about becoming part of The Mill and The Standard communities, along with enjoying the perks of city living.
When Kwesi first reconnected with Rob, they rediscovered some things they have in common, such as both being fathers of twins and sharing a desire to be at the heart of a growing community in Downtown Wilmington. After moving from Middletown in search of more energy and excitement, he initially settled in the DuPont Building.
He loved having everything at his fingertips—from the UPS store to his favorite spots in the DE.CO Contemporary Food Hall—and enjoyed discovering hidden gems like La Fia Bistro. Kwesi couldn’t help but laugh and remark that he and Rob would be seeing more of each other. For Kwesi, Wilmington feels full of life. He has seen how much the city has grown in just 15 months and finds it exciting to be part of a constantly evolving community.
Perks of Community Living
Kwesi appreciates the many advantages of living at The Standard, including the Play Where You Live card. He enjoys exploring Downtown Wilmington, especially its food scene. Though he’s only visited The Mill a few times, he plans to make it a bigger part of his routine, particularly for coffee breaks.
He also highlights the amenities, such as the premier fitness facility, CoreTen Fitness. Having a gym just downstairs has been a game-changer, making it easy to prioritize his health without the hassle of a long commute.
Balancing Work and Life
Kwesi’s work at a nuclear power plant keeps him on his toes. With rotating shifts and two roles ranging from monitoring systems to overseeing maintenance schedules, his workdays are anything but routine.
He also appreciates having distinct spaces for work and home life. While his apartment is his sanctuary, he sees The Mill as the ideal environment to focus when he needs to work remotely.
Community and Connection
Kwesi values the sense of belonging he has found at The Mill and The Standard. As a people person, he thrives in communal spaces that provide opportunities to connect with others, whether it’s working on the third floor or grabbing a coffee.
He also praises the welcoming atmosphere created by staff like Laverna, who always greets him warmly. These small but thoughtful touches have made a big difference in his experience.
Final Thoughts
For Kwesi, living and working in Downtown Wilmington has been a rewarding experience. With its mix of community, convenience, and culture, it’s a place where he feels connected and inspired. As he continues to explore and embrace all the city has to offer, Kwesi’s story reflects the dynamic and supportive environment of The Mill and its surrounding community.
