The Story Behind Our Docking Station

When you walk into The Mill, we want the experience to be inspiring. The materials you see, the layout of the room, even the light fixtures have a part to play in creating that experience. But probably nothing is more striking than one of The Mill’s signature pieces: the massive docking station in the community area.

Back when the Mill was being built, our founder, Robert, was looking for the right material to build a docking station that would be the anchor for The Mill’s community members. He didn’t want an off-the-shelf piece of furniture. It had to be something unique to The Mill.

JKB Design’s Jim Buckley, a good friend of Robert’s, happened upon a barn for sale in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. The barn’s beams were made of American Chestnut, a near-extinct wood that has been almost impossible to find for 200 years. There was a problem though. The barn’s owners weren’t just selling wood, they wanted to sell the barn. So we bought the barn.

A few weeks of work later, Jim had finished the docking station. It was built with craftsmanship, extinct wood, and a story. The wood from the barn was also used to cover the walls of our lobby!
